Beyond the Crown Jewels – discover what most visitors miss.

The Tower of London is one of the most iconic sites in the world — a fortress, a palace, a prison, and a symbol of British power. But just beyond its moat lies a quieter London, rich in secrets and surprise. Here are five spots worth exploring next time you visit:

1. St Dunstan in the East

Just a 5-minute walk from the Tower, this bombed-out church has been transformed into a peaceful garden of stone and ivy. It’s one of London’s most photogenic ruins — quiet, contemplative, and entirely free to enter.

2. All Hallows by the Tower

Older than the Tower itself, this often-overlooked church dates back to AD 675. Beneath the nave is a small but fascinating crypt museum — including a Roman floor and an altar that survived the Great Fire of 1666.

3. Postman’s Park

Tucked behind the Museum of London, this green space holds a unique memorial: a wall of hand-painted tiles commemorating ordinary Londoners who died saving others. Quiet, powerful, and very human.

4. The London Roman Wall

A surviving section of the 2,000-year-old Roman city wall lies just behind Tower Hill Station. Most people pass it without noticing, but it’s a direct link to the city’s earliest history — and it’s hiding in plain sight.

5. Wilton’s Music Hall

A little further east lies the world’s oldest surviving grand music hall — still in operation. With original gas lamps, peeling wallpaper, and a packed calendar of performances, Wilton’s is pure Victorian atmosphere.
